When we eat food, our stomach produces acid to help digest it. A meal can stay in the stomach for up to 4 hours. Our stomach has a lining which protects it from the acid. In some cases, the stomach acid rises up into the oesophagus (food pipe) and throat where we don’t have a protective lining, causing a burning sensation in the chest and/or a bitter acidic taste in the mouth or throat.
